I haven't really done much role-playing before, so I'm up for anything, really. Don't know what I like and what I don't yet. :p

We've had a couple of role play threads going, not including BRJ's My Little Human.

I don't have a problem with them, except I always end up making cameo appearances rather than being in the action so I tend to just end up observing rather than taking part.

I think we should make a list of who's taking part first.
Give us an idea on numbers and stuff.

So far the poll says 9 are interested. Looking at the thread, we have (in order of first post) Me, Firesparkle, BRJ, Pon4, Rizae, LucidBlaze, Dayotuh and Shady Daze. LezliDax, are you in?

Well in RiM the emphasis on the character creation is creating a group of friends that compliment each other (so they recommend creating them as a group). This means that if you're involved then chances are you won't end up making cameos.

Neither have I, but it seems a other few people are new to pen and paper games. Reading the guide, if you're interetsed in light hearted adventures (CMC), the the group should be foals. For a more regular episode, Fillies/colts and for more serious stuff (like two-parters), Stallions/mares. You CAN play as a mixed group, but that can get complicated due to age limiting the "severity" a character can go through.

Awesome! do you have any preferences on age? I've already outlined the key age differences though, and that's what will shape the adventures. The character creation guide can be found here in case I've missed something crucial (age is under "I'm a big pony").

I guess I would be better at Mare age - kinda like Rarity's maturity

Cool. We'll see what other people prefer. As I said, you can do a mixed group but you just have to bear in mind the youngest characters.

Sure, unless everpony is young, I don't mind being a colt or a filly, if that works better it will be a challenge to try to act it out okay

Do people normally use IRC or Skype or the forum when doing these?

I'm not sure. With the forum, I can see the thread "getting in the way". On the other hand, on the forum it is clear for new people who might be interested in joining. I would assume Skype.

The conversation system (our PMs) are basically private threads you can invite people to.

The problem with Skype and Irc is that it's really difficult to get everyone together at the same time.
It's difficult enough for my D&D group to find time and we can always contact each other!
Using a forum, over all progress will be slower but people are more likely to find the time to post response and reactions.

You could always have a Skype/IRC/whatever out-of-character chat and post when in-character things happen, though it's a bit clumsy I admit.

There is a limit to the number of people you can have in a conversation though, which is currently 6. If we can't see another option then we could talk to Alteran about that limit. He may be able to increase it or he may simply say that a thread will be best.

Pros of Skype: Much more "dynamic" roleplaying, can all make decisions together quickly and effectively, all people are present at the same time together so noone can get "left behind". Cons of Skype: The getting everyone online at the same time, the fact not everyone has a good enough home internet connection to maintain a consistent Skype call for a decent length of time (okay maybe that one's just me).

Pros of forum/PM: Can in theory keep the game going constantly, with no need for people to be together all at once, has a record of everything that's happened at a glance just by reading through the pages. Cons: Easy for decisions to be made when not everyone is present and people could miss out on doing things if they don't keep up (unless there was a structured time for everyone, but that gives it the same problems as Skype), the amount of rapid posting during discussion could quickly become overwhelming and hard to keep up with.

Just giving a few observations on what I've noticed from my experience of roleplaying games online, which is fairly limited as I usually play along with everyone in person.

Maybe if we spoke to one of the Admins they would consider setting up an area of the forums specifically for Roleplaying or something?

I think we've had that request before, I'll ask them as I can't remember the outcome.
