    Hi everypony,

There has been a recent increase in the number of mobile phone numbers being posted up on the forums. These numbers have been removed already but I want to advise on why they should not be posted in the forums publicly.

The first problem with posting anything on these forums is by their nature they are very public. This means that all members of the community will have access to this information which is most likely not a big problem, but may come with the problem of getting a lot of calls you may not want. But there is also a second group of people who will have access to these numbers who may be less then savory.

These people will include scammers, criminals, stalkers or worse. For this reason and your own safety it is really not a good idea to post a mobile number on the forums and if one is posted our staff will remove them when seen for your own safety.

I can understand wanting to give people attending meets etc a way to contact you but I would advise only giving your number to people you trust in private or using a disposable PAYG number for meets which could be disposed of afterwards. This way you can be contacted but do not endanger yourself or open yourself up to a flood of cold calling scams which can get very annoying

Not to mention the crawlers that pick up the numbers for scammers all over the world

The same goes for all forms of personal information - private addresses, or other sensitive bits of information.

Please do not leave your home address on any public areas of the site.

Is there any way in this type of forum to have a secret sub-forum that you can only access when you post, for example, 250 posts? I think that could help the issue as stalkers, pedos etc etc would really have to work at it to get mobile numbers. It's also good to have for more private stuff that people want to talk about.

I saw a few people doing this recently and was very concerned, I'm glad the official position backs my concern up. I'll make sure to report any I see in the future.
Socialising is fine, nobody wants to get in the way of people meeting and getting involved with each other, but please be careful with how you handle your details. This is a public forum for better or worse.
We have the Conversation system for closed discussion. Maybe an expansion of that would be nice but a hidden forum? There's no point.

It's a clutter, spreads topics too much, creates a two-tier membership (which Alteran mentioned as being undesirable in another forum suggestion), posting 250 posts doesn't magically stop a member potentially being motivated to do something shady or unwanted with info that gets posted, more importantly we have a system for it anyway, one which explicitly limits to the members who can see the information you wish to post. The entire conversation system was built for private multi-member discussions, even if it leaves something to be desired in numbers. You also have the option to discuss these details outside of the site still, though similar discretion is still advisable.

I think if a member wants to give away contact numbers then they should do it via PM if the member can trust them very much

I never was a fan of posting fully uncensored details like that on the forums anyway. That said, whilst the conversation/PM side of things is useful, it does have its' drawbacks (looking at the 6-user limit of participants). This factor alone ended up causing a split in a group for a meetup, something which could've been avoided had there been a higher limit in PMs (so numbers could be distributed amongst a pre-meet group easier).

Based on that feedback, I have raised the limit for new members from 5 to 7 recipients, and removed the limit entirely for trusted members who have more than 100 posts.

We can keep track of the system, so if it gets abused to spam people, they can lose the privilege.

While I posted my mobile number a couple of times on event threads and the like, I can understand why this was necessary. And the increase in limits for conversations solves the issue quite nicely :)

This is an ideal solution that I hope event organisers will take advantage of. I have had to ninja some numbers from posts before now.

all this is understanable. Its not just on sites like this of Facebook, its anything where you use the mobile number as a contact, it can and dose get sold on to others and often to scam companies and criminals. So just becareful.

Why would you want to risk it anyway? That's just stupid.

Because you don't care if you receive a load of pam because you hardly ever use your phone and you would rather just make it easy for everyone and give them your number. That's just efficient.
