It's not surprising at all. She has all the elements of a memorable villain. Visually, her design is completely unique and it stands out all the more in a show full of bright colours. She's very dark compared to someone like Discord, who was threatening but childlike. Nightmare Moon was menacing, but beyond being theatrical never actually accomplished anything. With Chrysalis, you could really believe that somepony could have gotten hurt. Plus - villain song! Who doesn't love when the baddie belts one out?

What's interesting is that despite how sinister she was, the majority of the fanart makes her out to be quite the loveable character. I'm surprised there hasn't been more nightmare fuel-ish work. Not that this didn't make me shiver:

In contrast, I've seen a lot of twisted Discord art. I think it's just a fandom thing - we like to continue the story and fill in the blanks we think are there. If the character is wicked, we imagine what they would be nice and visa versa.

Ah yes, 'Ask Eldritch Discord' springs to mind! It would be cool if later canon filled in the blanks viz-a-viz where the changelings came from. We got a fleeting glimpse of a wilderness-type environment that they were blasted into. Sadly I imagine Chrysalis was kind of a one-time-only villain though...

Well, since she wasnt destroyed or imprisoned, I can see it being a possibility c:

My ultimate hope is that the season 3 opener involves Chrysalis resurrecting Discord and they join forces to create the greatest threat to Equestria we have ever seen.

I like to think that Discord wasn't really trying the first time round, perhaps because he thought the ponies didn't actually have the potential to use the Elements of Harmony to seal him back into stone. If you think about all the stuff he did, like switching between day and night whenever he wants, turning a dirt road to soap, gravity-defying pies OUT OF NOWHERE, exploding chocolate milks of glass etc. it seems like he can do pretty much ANYTHING, and it seems he is stronger than the princesses in that sense. I think if he actually became serious about taking over Equestria and whatnot, he could easily be the biggest threat. In fact, based on what he seems to be capable of from what we've seen, I don't see how he could be beaten at all if he really tried.

*takes off over-thinking cap* ENOUGH

Someone like Discord could never remain serious for long though. Sure, he might win, but he would quickly let that go to his head. Hell, that's pretty much exactly what happened!

But yes, Chrysalis is possibly more threatening because she's more vunerable. She knows she can be defeated (before the wedding, I bet the main cast could have taken her even without the elements), and so is less inclined to mess about toying with her opponents. Makes her a lot more dangerous.

I love the episodes. It feels so epic.
One minor complaint would be how quickly Chrysalis was defeated by the love of Shining Armor and Cadance.
In fact, that's my criticism for lots of stories where the main characters find the ultimate weapon to defeat big bad in the end.
I always wonder why they couldn't have done it sooner. (In this case, Cadance was left in the room with Shining Armor for some time. Why didn't she do what she did before mane 6 was captured?)
My favorite stories are the ones where the protagonist find the ultimate weapon, but that only weakens the antagonist. Only after a long and bloody fight would the protagonist emerge victorious.
Well, I am asking too much for a kids' show.

And when will Celestia learn not to lock away the elements of harmony? lol

OK, just watched the episode again, and I noticed something, has it been pointed out before that when Celesita's crows hits the floor it makes the sound of the wedding march?
