The way I told my family was to Read my little Dashie, cry, and run to mypairnets. "Sweetie you okay?" "I'm fine, read a story..." "What one?" "A my little pony one.." My mother stared at me for 5 minutes they agreed at I was Pegasister. After that she noticed I was buying dolls and got scared. I laughed and brought more. That's the Las way of doing things bro.

Ok, sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead as it were, bur I have a significant update.

Today, at dinner, I had a rather interesting discussion with my mother. She basically told me I was a brony. I know I posted earlier in the thread about both my parents discovering my pony merch and not taking much interest, and then me trying to explain the fandom and them forgetting. Apparantly she read an article in the daily mail about military bronies in the US and linked it up with my blind bags in my room. She didn't specify if it was an article in the physical paper or their website, but after searching through their awful website for a bit, I managed to find this which could possibly be it. I then explained about all the meets were brony ones, and all my friends from this site are bronies and she was generally ok with it. At least now I won't have to hide anything and I can probably buy even more pony merch.

This is an interesting development electrokitty. Hopefully it turns out to be a positive one! It does concern me that you receive the Daily Mail in your house though

My parents were on holiday in France when Lanky Scribbler and I became bronies. Within 20 minutes of them getting home we both told them all about it. My dad said he might check the show out (he hasn't yet though), and my mum has caught the occasional glimpse of it on my computer screen and whilst she likes the art style and is happy for us to be part of such a lovely community, she personally can't stand the show purely for the high pitched squealing of the voices.

The one thing I'm worried about is the fact that I'm young, 14. So liking a girl's TV show may put them under the impression that I am Homosexual. This isn't the best thing for a 14 year old straight male. I will have alot of explaining to do if I come out. I will try to go to the meets at some point with a fellow brony, but in the words of Big Bang Theory:
    Wolowitz: Vegas Baby
Koothripali: What will you tell your mother
    Wolowitz: Sea World Baby
I will pretty much have to either lie as to where I am going or just bend the truth to where I'm not lying but not fully telling the truth. Any ideas?

I'm not sure that the age will make a difference in that regard. Your parents reaction will be based on their own opinion of you and of such fandoms. If your parents are relaxed they won't likely have an issue (although they might tease you a bit), if not then it becomes more difficult. They might even just think it's just a phase you're going through, given your age.
You could bend the truth by saying that you're not interested in the ponies themselves, just the idea of a kind and accepting group of people (which bronies are, at least on this site). I dunno, it's difficult to provide accurate advice to someone in such a situation as we don't know your parents.

Truth be told, there's a lot of similarities between coming out as gay and coming out as a brony, based purely on the fact that being a brony will make people thing you're gay. But honestly, I'd recommend just coming out with it and making sure to reassure them you're not gay. And probably once you've taken some time to really explain the community behind it, they'll probably understand. The part people always worry about is those first few minutes after coming out, when people are confused and perhaps judgemental, but all it takes is a few minutes to get past the worst of it.

Really? I've never had someone think I'm gay because I've told them I'm a brony.

Then again, most of them probably thought I was gay before that..

When I go to these meets I always tell my father exactly what I'm doing (for example, going to the 02 cinema or to the London MCM expo) but when asked who with I will always tell them "friends". It's not like I'm lying, it's just I think my father would be dubious of me going to meet up with adult males who watch MLP. Unless you're going to a MLP focused meet like BUCK or the season premiere, in which case I would recommend just saying you're going to a convention or to watch a TV show with friends.

Basically all you need to do is leave out the incriminating details. It's important you still tell them what you're doing and where you going, but just don't tell them it's got anything to do with My Little Pony.

If you make a big deal out of it, your parents are more likely to think its something to make a big deal about. If you act like you've got something to hide then it will only raise more questions. I don't mean you should go and announce loudly that you're going to watch ponies after eating dinner or stuff like that, but just be relaxed about it. If they find you watching an episode or wearing a pony t-shirt just tell them its a decent TV show that's got a large and growing fanbase and that its not like the older generations, and don't avoid any questions they might have. If you act like its normal they're more likely to shrug it off as just something else the kids are into these days.

Oh, and if they seriously think you're gay for watching it beyond the usual parental teasing, explain that you aren't and that if they think a TV show makes someone gay then they have no concept of what homosexuality actually is.

    Thanks For the help.

Thanks, that's probably what i was going to do anyway. I try to leave out details with everything. If they ask me what i'm watching, i tell them a show. And they dont care anymore.

You like something feminine, flamboyant, and has a lot of pink. Most people will just naturally associate that with homosexuality. Hell, I can't even blame them, have you ever seen a gay pride parade?

I think my existing femininity protected me from it, since most people just expected something like that :p
