As per @Loganberry 's suggestion I will store my short stories in here :) (that will also keep the competition thread free of my musings :p )

My short stories tend to focus on character scenarios and feelings. They are also often inspired by songs. In terms of characters I'll probably make Princess Galaxia and Celestia a running theme of a few stories and I also like to write about Sunset Shimmer, but really I like writing about anything that seems interesting or under-appreciated in the fandom. @Irregular Apocalypse I am happy for all the short stories in this thread to be uploaded to the UKofE flash fic archive (check that out if you haven't already!).

    My offerings so far:

A small white foal gazes towards a large white mare who is nursing a dark-furred baby-foal.

The large mare stops nursing to lean down to the filly.

"...and that's why it's called Spring, because when the sun returns life 'springs' out everwhere, from plants to ponies."

    The filly nods attentively.

The large mare returns to nursing, shifting her weight a little.

    The filly wrinkles her nose.

    "It smells nice."

    The large mare chuckles sonorously.

"Spring is when the land takes its first breath after Winter - the scent of life's love for the sun."

Sunset knew it was wrong to to read Flash's letter.

'My body aches to feel your breath.'

    She reads.

'I would be the one to hold you down.'

Her face, already crimson, colours a little more.

'...and after, I'd wipe away the tears, just close your eyes...'

Sunset turns away from the page.

'Is it my fault that he's so obsessed with another pony? Should I tell him? Does he know what she is!?'

    She thinks.

Her eyes flick up to the first, mesmerising, passage.

    'My love,

Your voice is trapped in in my mind, and the sight of you haunts my deams. I'm only happy when I sleep, because there nothing stands between us. I implore you, my love, would I spend forever here and not be satisfied?'

Bill the cockatrice was grumpy. The party at the pony hencoup on the edge of the forest had gone badly. No chicken understood him, not even Eli. It made him feel cold and hard, and when he felt that way he had a way of spreading it around.

Bill plodded along into the Everfree, not thinking where he was going, when he bumped into something - something with a chicken's head and lizard's tail.

The two cockatrice looked hard at each other. And harder. And harder... Bill cracked first, but he wasn't annoyed; for the first time in centuries, he smiled.

Sunset grimaces internally as another pony steps past Celestia to greet her. Celestia had made it seem as though the gala would be impressive, but it was just a procession of pointless ponies.

Sunset wriggles her little pony flank irritably iside her shimmering cyan dress and steals a look back at it, admiring the way the flaming red/yellow sun appeared to illuminate the diaphanous fabric.

Her eyes flick forward to the latest mediocrity to say something meaningless to her. Sunset coos phatically back and, to her intense disappointment, is rewarded by a reasurring smile from her mentor.

Celestia had seemed so imposing at first. So important. But she wasn't. She was just as vacuous and empty as everypony else. She would rather fritter her time away on pointless socialising than achieve anything. But Sunset didn't need her anymore. She had found another place. A place where she wouldn't just be Celestia's little cheerleader.

Celestia gazes round the Castle of the Alicorns, the castle of their mother, not as it is now - a ruin of a ruin - but as it was then.

A sick feeling of dread clings to her as she once again climbs the steps to her mother's room. Luna is beside her, but she is silent, sullen, angry.

Next, they are in the room. Celestia sees her lying there. Celestia doesn't look at her mother, but at the floor, and the hair spreading across the stones, its spark replaced by a drab grey.

    "You can't!"

She hears her sister shouts, Luna's voice cracking.

    "Sister! She... can't."

Celestia puts a hoof to her sister's taut frame.

"Let her go, my sister. It is time."

She mimes the words just as her mother told her to, like a good filly, like the future Princess.

    ...

    Celestia shudders awake.

The filly had asked her something.

"But why did she leave? Don't you miss her?"

Celestia hesitates, still upset from the waking dream.

She blinks back a tear, and steadies herself.

"Every road comes to an end little one. Everypony is on a journey and when that journey ends they rest."

The purple filly looks at her, closed, uncertain, for all the world as her sister did all those ages ago when she had said the same thing.

I see her little white hooves race as she gallops towards me, pink mane flapping behind her.

I lean down, hooves out to catch her and she squeals happily.

    'Can we play?'

She asks, and tugs at my hoof.

I nod. My subjects can wait. Today is a day for family.

I lift her up in my hooves.

    "More more!"

    She squeals.

I lift her higher than my hooves could ever take her, the magical power causing her fur to ripple. I laugh, caught up in the moment. I stop for a second to hug her properly, and as we nuzzle a deep contentment washes over me.

Eris stretches out a talon towards the magical force. Softly, almost lovingly, she draws it, marvelling at its tension. The magic of Equestria was built on harmony, and every departure towards discord created a resonance, a vibration - almost musical - that she felt in her core. Her talon releases the force. In some plane she hears terrified whinnies of the Equestrian ponies, but is too wrapped up to pay them much mind.

Eris slaps her large paw into the intricate weave of dimensional plane and magic that spreads, taut, over Equestra. She laughs excitedly at the loud crash as the fabric of Equestria resists the urge to chaos.

This time she dimly she hears a voice shouting at her. One of the ponies, commanding her.

She turns her attention to the pony. The magic of Equestria courses throught it, focusing sharply at the tip of its horn. As the pony shouts it flares its wings at her.

"Play time's over for you Discord."

Eris lashes at the magic in the pony with her long tail, hoping to upset it, but the harmony barely shifts.

Eris attempts to pluck the magic from the pony's horn, but her talon recoils from its sharpness.

To her horror she feels the Equestrian magic press into her, calming her own discord, subjecting her to harmony. Her eyes grow heavy and she feels her body stiffen, encrusted by it.

Most dreams are a chore to the Princess of the Night, only explored for duty's sake, to keep Nightmares at bay - that is only natural, since most ponies fear the dark. But some dreams are dedicated to the night, to her, like this pony's dreams...

The stars swirly round Luna as the normally reserved Princess swings her flank to a syncopated beat and playful bass. She prances her hooves to the melody of a saxophone trio, black velvet slippers replacing the cumbersome silver hoof-boots.

Then the vocals come in and she feels herself melt into the euphoric freedom of the music.

'Ooh, you shock it, shake it, baby
    Electric lady you're a star
You got a classic kind of crazy
But you know just who you are
You got the look the Gods agree they wanna see
All the birds and the bees
Dancing with the freaks in the trees
And watch the water turn to wine
Outer space and out your mind
Ooh shock me one good time

    ...

    *Nod, nod, nod*

Goes Vinyl Scratch, day-dreaming as usual.

Rainbowshine plumps her pillow for what feels like the umpteenth time that night. Every time her eyes close she can see it - the stadium full of ponies cheering and all eyes on her as the rainbow aura from her signature move bathes her in its light. She could already see his wonderstruck gaze as she raced through the cumulus at her peak speed (and only a few mares in her year were faster). Then she would stop herself with the wing-strength that had made her one of the top marathon fliers at Junior Flight camp. The sudden stop would cause the droplets to fly round her and create a rainbow as the sunlight glanced through them. Her name wasn't Rainbow Shine for nothing.

Rainbowshine wasn't nervous. She knew she could perform that move in her sleep, but waiting was agony. She plumps her pillow again, her sleepless eyes large with frustrated purpose.

    "Tonight might be special!"

I argue with the mirror, pouting and blowing my fringe.

    'But there's college tomorrow.'

The reflection says, sensible short hair bobbing as I nod to myself.

"But I can't stay home, I'm all dressed up."

I complain, running my hands through my short hair, subconsciously mussing it up.

    '"You big palooka.'

My reflection tuts, shaking its head. I know I've won.

I give a final twirl to the mirror, smirk at myself in the mirror one last time, and exit into the Manehattan night.

    The rise of Adagio Dazzle

Adagio gazed up at the stars, filled with longing. She wasn't looking at the brightness, however, but for a shadow - the black shape of a flying creature.

As she gazed she saw the shape she was looking for. In her excitement she jumped and splashed about, thrashing herself about in the water. The shape came closer.

Adagio had learned the language of the creatures that made the shapes. They were called 'ponies' and the shape was an 'airship'. Her sisters merely thought the ponies were land-prey - inhabitants of another world. Adagio had come to dislike her sister's brutal vision of things, she didn't think the ponies were prey like the mindless fish - the fish didn't make things like the airships... but more importantly the fish couldn't talk and it was this that adagio really longed for. Adagio could think, but her body was made for brutality not communication.

A light shone on her from the airship as she continued to dance in the water. Eventually one of the ponies called out to her.

Adagio knew the pony's voice. He was called Starswirl. She had encountered this pony a long time ago, when he had fallen into the water from another big black shape, one that floated on the water. She would have devoured him but for the fact that instead of the howling or hissing noises of other land creatures who had fallen into her domain, he had 'talked' to her. She didn't understand what the noises were then, but she was instantly mesmerised. She defended the pony from her sisters and had taken him back to his world.

Since then Starswirl had taught Adagio to understand him and his world. Today he has promised to bring a new pony 'shape', a gem, for her and each of her sisters. He had told her that by using its magic she could 'talk' like him, so that she could share her longings and desires.

She and her sisters would leave the darkness of her world behind, they would bask in the sound of the new world, and no pony would deny her voice.

This is great; delighted to see you go for this! :D I particularly like the line "Spring is when the land takes its first breath after Winter" -- that's such a lovely image. :)

Headcanon: ok so Discord's not going to bound by a mundane things like gender and so him and Eris are one and the same to me :3 also Eris is a bit nicer than headcanon discord

The description of magic is similar to the description in an old fan fic called Metamor keep (who probably got it from somewhere else). I love the idea of magic as lines of force :3

Eris stretches out a talon towards the magical force. Softly, almost lovingly, she draws it, marvelling at its tension. The magic of Equestria was built on harmony, and every departure towards discord created a resonance, a vibration - almost musical - that she felt in her core. Her talon releases the force. My submission for the June Flash fic competition
The longest time is the time spent anticipating something you want, and Dashie has just achieved her dream so it makes sense if it's about her. But it can't be just "yay Wonderbolt" because who can relate to that. Also we all know Dash and her dreams... but we don't know Dashie's parents (which I think are Rainbow Blaze and Rainbowshine). They seem to like sports and passed that on to their filly :3 So my flash fic is going to be heavily based on the best young fliers competition and Rainbowshine anticipating her performance.

It is also based on this song :3

And this great concept from Boast Busters
    [IMG]

Written in one go and 150 words exactly! I credit the awesomeness of my subject :3
Rainbowshine plumps her pillow for what feels like the umpteenth time that night. Every time her eyes close she can see it - the stadium full of ponies cheering and all eyes on her as the rainbow aura from her signature move bathes her in its light. heavily headcannoning this. The sirens didn't make the gems but were given them by Starswirl.

Also there are no sea-ponies or other sentient life in adagio's part of the sea other than the sirens :p

also adagio is kind of the littler mermaid in this D:

not a song this time. Just Zephyr is an underused ship and Flutter's lil Brutter.

    Thunder and Zeph

It was Hearts and Hooves morning and two pegasi stallions, one slight and teal and the other well-built and black, are strutting about preparing to race.

A smirking Rainbow trots up to them.

"Whoever crosses the line first gets to be my date."

"Oh Rainbows you don't need to go to all this trou-"

Zephyr blusters only to be cut off.

    "Yeah!"

Thunderlane interrupts him confidently, looking down at the slight stallion. Thunderlane wasn't about to lose to this lean little thing. A popular stallion, he'd dated most of the Ponyvillian pegasi - they were ok but he got bored fast and he wanted more. Rainbow represented something far more promising. Secretly he was flattered that she'd responded to his Hearts and Hooves card at all - she was somepony now, one of Equestria's most famous athletes.

Zephyr sees the other stallion looking him over and represses a shiver. He was beginning to worry that this might not end well. Did Rainbow really like him? He was sure she did... his mom always said. But why would she ask him to race this beefcake. He swishes his tail and flicks his hips flamboyantly at the other.

"You'll be seeing a lot more of that baby from the finish line when I breeze in first!"

    He smirks.

At a distance from the two stallions Fluttershy and Rainbow whisper to each other.

"So you really think this'll work?"

    Rainbow asks skeptically.

    Fluttershy is beaming.

"Aw just jook at him, how natural they look together."

    She replies happily.

    "Yeah, but is he even..?"

    Rainbow continues.

Fluttershy just gives Rainbow a look. Rainbow shrugs, momentarily glad she was an only foal.

"As soon as you told me about Thunderlane I knew he was perfect. He'll take him under his wing."

    The yellow pegasus replies.

"I'm not sure that's the only way-"

The two mares try not to giggle.

damnit I'm beginning to write longer stories again.

    Flamingo flummox

    Hello dear Scootaloo

I have a tale for you

    A story from my home

One not in any pony tome

The tale is of a bird

A stranger one you won’t have heard

The tale starts in jungle long ago

With a bird you know as ‘Flamingo’

And a tiny zebra in bushes nearby,

Who goes by the name of ‘I’

But no older than you are now

    Surprise showing upon her brow

For this bird was not brightest pink

As ponies would have you think

    But a startling white

    Bright as my stripe!

And the strangeness does not end there

These leggy birds took to the air!

You might think sky the place a bird should be

But an odder sight you never did see

The process began with such a flap

That I fell flat upon my back!

And the noise that they made

The sound left me quite amazed

Then my little self gave such a laugh

As one clumsy bird hit a giraffe!

Another silly one tripped over me!

    It truly was fine comedy

But what really gave me mirth

Was one whose beak stuck in the earth!

That silliness did not end the fuss,

Since in the air they looked more ridiculous!

Their feet poked out from their behind

As their neck stretched frontwards to form a line

It really was a great trick

To grant flight to such a funny white stick!

So there, my sweet orange filly

I hope you liked my little ditty

About a silly bird who ponies think

    (But isn’t really) always pink

Whose honk I hear sometimes and grin

    A little zebra over again

    Littlest Pony Shop

    “It’s a horse!”

    Exclaimed Blythe.

    “Agh!”

    Exclaimed the ‘horse’.

It wasn’t unusual for horses to speak to Blythe, who had last summer acquired the ability to speak to animals. Nor was it unusual that the horse was pink and fluffy, that’s just how animals were in LPS-land. However, one feature of the horse did seem a little strange.

“What’s that on your flank little horse?”

“My… cutie mark? Hi I’m Pinkie Pie! Are you from Canterlot high?”

Shot back Pinkie in rapid succession.

    “Wait.. slow down!”

    Blythe chuckles.

“Your owner must be a little girl with a name like that.”

    She observes.

    Pinkie frowns.

“Nopony ‘owns’ me, I’m my own independent mare. Except I kinda get board from the Cakes, but they don’t ‘own’ me.”

    Blythe waves her hands frantically.

“Ummm… ok. I’ll ask Mrs Twombley about the Cakes.”

She says, tuning out the babbling pink horse and making a mental note.

“Well welcome to Littlest Pet Shop. I’m sorry I don’t go to Canterlot high. Is that the school that your own- err Ms Cake goes?”

    Blythe replies.

“Nah! But she works in a shop near there. Say… I’m not being rude, but your head-“

    “-is really huge. I know.”

Blythe interjects with a sigh. Some things about her world just didn’t make sense to her.

“In fact why am I still a pony in your world? Omygosh this must be the other world. Oh no! Not the one where that-”

    “Aiee!”

Screams a pink monkey, Minka, exciteable, bubbly and unpredictable resident of the LPS daycare,

Pinkie and the intruder narrow their eyes at each other

    “There can only be one.”

    They say grimly in unison.

“Woah - Minka, Pinkie calm down! What’s wrong?”

    Blythe says, reasonably.

    “She copied my style.”

    Complains Pinkie.

“At least I’m unpredictable in a way that makes sense! You’re just-“

Minka sticks her tongue out and makes a doolally noise.

    “That’s it! Put ‘em up!”

Pinkie shouts and presents boxing hooves.

    Blythe holds the two apart.

“Hey! Pinkie, Minka didn’t copy you. You’re both kind of exciteable and silly but loads of people are like that.”

    Pinkie hesitates.

“And you, Minka, even if Pinkie is sillier in some ways that’s fine. Sunil and Vinny are just as silly and there’s room for them.”

    Minka pauses too.

    “Friends?”

    Blythe asks.

    “Yeah.”

The two pink ones agree, and hug :3

    Love born

Thorax hissed at the traitor. As the most able of the Changeling drones and first among the Queen's bodyguard the unlpeasant task had fallen to him. The assembled hive look on, some belligerent, others - friends of the unfortunate drone - looking at the ground.

"This traitor was thinking of leaving! Fool! Imbecile! No one can sustain us but our queen"

    Thorax pauses.

    "Our Queen!"

    The crowd roar back.

"Without the hive we are lost."

    He pauses.

    "The hive."

The crowd erupts, with each drone tries to outdo the other in their show of loyalty. Thorax knew that his team were checking for any signs of reluctance.

    "What happens to traitors?"

    Thorax hisses the word.

A roar of different punishments. The torture was sustained over weeks, but the real torture though was being drained of magic, and refused to feed from the hive's residual energy. Without the magic of love the gnawing hunger would soon consume any drone.

    "We shred them!"

Thorax howls, and rips the delicate wings of the drone with his savage fangs.

    ---

Later Thorax returned to the traitor - Chitin's - cell later. With an imperious hiss he dismissed the guards. What he had to say had to be between them.

    "Thorax?"

Chitin feebly rose to his hooves.

    "Silence scum!"

    He said loudly.

In a soft voice, barely above a whisper.

"Chitin, why, how... how could you do this?"

He said to his old friend. Chitin had always been so wise, so clever. Chitin was the younger of the two, marginally - they had been lavae together - but Thorax had always looked up to Chitin. Times were hard in the hive and survival meant being one trick ahead of the others, Chitin's sharpness had saved Thorax more times than he could count.

Chtin seemed to shake. Thorax almost started in shock when he realised his old friend was laughing.

    "Th-Thorax sh-she's so stupid."

Thorax hissed, his pain and grief converted to anger.

"How can you say that? Everything she does, she does for the hive! You know that-"

"Thorax...she doesn't understand...she says she loves us... but she doesn't understand."

    the cursed queen

and also Milk and Cookies by Melanie Martinez :3 (unlinkable due to language)

"By the power vested in me you are Princess Rubi no more.

You shall be Queen as you desire, but not a queen of ponies.

You will be called Chrysallis. Queen of a new race. Queen of the Changelings."

Queen Faust finished her incantation and raised her horn to the stars. Behind her the ex-ponies of Princess Rubi - now Queen Chrysallis' court - hissed as their pony forms were corrupted.

"If you can learn to love, Chrysallis, then you will be free from this curse. Until then you and the ponies foolish enough to follow you will wither."

    *blows dust off thread*

    My little Pink
    heavenly unicorn.png

and also by the much anticipated arrival of a plush :3
"I still think it looks nothing like me."

I sigh as Pink's piercing voice distracts me from my work once more.

"I've told you Pinks it's a plush. It's not a work of art. I think she did a great job on it. Honestly until I met you I thought that if you did suddenly pop into my world you'd look basically like that." I respond.

Pink, sitting on my bed, is squaring up to my large Pinkie plush and scowling.

"But where are its hooves?" she objects; I recognise the beginning of one of her long litany of complaints about the 'inaccaracy of human perceptions of Equestrian ponies'.

"For the hundredth time, it looks like you don't have them. I dunno - maybe kids prefer you to be cuddly and cute not... hoofy." I (reluctantly) engage.

"But why do you think we'd be like that. You're not a kid!" she continues.

I look over at the scowling pink pony on my bed. Whatever she thought, she looked nothing like what passes for a pony on earth. About 3ft high, pouffy pink mane, fur covering her miniature pink hooves... She had more in common with the plush than she admitted.

"Well you don't look like any pony I've ever seen. Would you like to be enormous and brown?"

The only response I get is a tongue poke, which - to me - only makes her resemble the plush more.

My little Pink 2 (should have realised ponies in human world situaitons would be a fertile theme :p )

"'ell me 'bout 'em 'ronies 'gain." Pink asks through a mouthful of toffee apple.

We're walking (well she's trotting) into the city centre to a pony-meet. After several breakfast-in-bed's, dozens of pinatas (which raises all sorts of questions I think) and general appeasing of Pink, I had finally persuaded her to meet other people who would 'get' her.

"They're like me - fans of the show." I explain.

"mph." she affirms, dismissively. Pink had a number of criticisms of her depiction througout the seasons. A number of times objecting that she 'wasn't even there' or 'would never do that'.

"But they don't think ponies are just like in the show."

    "mph?" she queries.

"I mean they like to reimagine them you know. Some of the kiddy stuff doesn't appeal, liike you always say." I continue encouragingly.

"mph." she nods, and swalling her apple contines, "I think if I saw the show I'd be rooting for Tirek." she snipes.

I wince, Pink was great fun generally, but sometimes the differences between her and the Pinkie on the show could be jarring.

"But I'll be nice." she sighs, and looks at me meaningfully.

I hand her another toffee apple.
