As per @Loganberry 's suggestion I will store my short stories in here (that will also keep the competition thread free of my musings ) My short stories tend to focus on character scenarios and feelings. They are also often inspired by songs. In terms of characters I'll probably make Princess Galaxia and Celestia a running theme of a few stories and I also like to write about Sunset Shimmer, but really I like writing about anything that seems interesting or under-appreciated in the fandom. @Irregular Apocalypse I am happy for all the short stories in this thread to be uploaded to the UKofE flash fic archive (check that out if you haven't already!). My offerings so far: Spoiler: Queen Galaxia's filly A small white foal gazes towards a large white mare who is nursing a dark-furred baby-foal. The large mare stops nursing to lean down to the filly. "...and that's why it's called Spring, because when the sun returns life 'springs' out everwhere, from plants to ponies." The filly nods attentively. The large mare returns to nursing, shifting her weight a little. The filly wrinkles her nose. "It smells nice." The large mare chuckles sonorously. "Spring is when the land takes its first breath after Winter - the scent of life's love for the sun." Spoiler: Flash fic (suggestiveness and creepiness warning :p) Sunset knew it was wrong to to read Flash's letter. 'My body aches to feel your breath.' She reads. 'I would be the one to hold you down.' Her face, already crimson, colours a little more. '...and after, I'd wipe away the tears, just close your eyes...' Sunset turns away from the page. 'Is it my fault that he's so obsessed with another pony? Should I tell him? Does he know what she is!?' She thinks. Her eyes flick up to the first, mesmerising, passage. 'My love, Your voice is trapped in in my mind, and the sight of you haunts my deams. I'm only happy when I sleep, because there nothing stands between us. I implore you, my love, would I spend forever here and not be satisfied?' Spoiler: Bushes of friendship - a tail of a lonely cockatrice Bill the cockatrice was grumpy. The party at the pony hencoup on the edge of the forest had gone badly. No chicken understood him, not even Eli. It made him feel cold and hard, and when he felt that way he had a way of spreading it around. Bill plodded along into the Everfree, not thinking where he was going, when he bumped into something - something with a chicken's head and lizard's tail. The two cockatrice looked hard at each other. And harder. And harder... Bill cracked first, but he wasn't annoyed; for the first time in centuries, he smiled. Spoiler: Sunset over Equestria Sunset grimaces internally as another pony steps past Celestia to greet her. Celestia had made it seem as though the gala would be impressive, but it was just a procession of pointless ponies. Sunset wriggles her little pony flank irritably iside her shimmering cyan dress and steals a look back at it, admiring the way the flaming red/yellow sun appeared to illuminate the diaphanous fabric. Her eyes flick forward to the latest mediocrity to say something meaningless to her. Sunset coos phatically back and, to her intense disappointment, is rewarded by a reasurring smile from her mentor. Celestia had seemed so imposing at first. So important. But she wasn't. She was just as vacuous and empty as everypony else. She would rather fritter her time away on pointless socialising than achieve anything. But Sunset didn't need her anymore. She had found another place. A place where she wouldn't just be Celestia's little cheerleader. Spoiler: Letting go Celestia gazes round the Castle of the Alicorns, the castle of their mother, not as it is now - a ruin of a ruin - but as it was then. A sick feeling of dread clings to her as she once again climbs the steps to her mother's room. Luna is beside her, but she is silent, sullen, angry. Next, they are in the room. Celestia sees her lying there. Celestia doesn't look at her mother, but at the floor, and the hair spreading across the stones, its spark replaced by a drab grey. "You can't!" She hears her sister shouts, Luna's voice cracking. "Sister! She... can't." Celestia puts a hoof to her sister's taut frame. "Let her go, my sister. It is time." She mimes the words just as her mother told her to, like a good filly, like the future Princess. ... Celestia shudders awake. The filly had asked her something. "But why did she leave? Don't you miss her?" Celestia hesitates, still upset from the waking dream. She blinks back a tear, and steadies herself. "Every road comes to an end little one. Everypony is on a journey and when that journey ends they rest." The purple filly looks at her, closed, uncertain, for all the world as her sister did all those ages ago when she had said the same thing. Spoiler: sunshine I see her little white hooves race as she gallops towards me, pink mane flapping behind her. I lean down, hooves out to catch her and she squeals happily. 'Can we play?' She asks, and tugs at my hoof. I nod. My subjects can wait. Today is a day for family. I lift her up in my hooves. "More more!" She squeals. I lift her higher than my hooves could ever take her, the magical power causing her fur to ripple. I laugh, caught up in the moment. I stop for a second to hug her properly, and as we nuzzle a deep contentment washes over me. Spoiler: Realiti Eris stretches out a talon towards the magical force. Softly, almost lovingly, she draws it, marvelling at its tension. The magic of Equestria was built on harmony, and every departure towards discord created a resonance, a vibration - almost musical - that she felt in her core. Her talon releases the force. In some plane she hears terrified whinnies of the Equestrian ponies, but is too wrapped up to pay them much mind. Eris slaps her large paw into the intricate weave of dimensional plane and magic that spreads, taut, over Equestra. She laughs excitedly at the loud crash as the fabric of Equestria resists the urge to chaos. This time she dimly she hears a voice shouting at her. One of the ponies, commanding her. She turns her attention to the pony. The magic of Equestria courses throught it, focusing sharply at the tip of its horn. As the pony shouts it flares its wings at her. "Play time's over for you Discord." Eris lashes at the magic in the pony with her long tail, hoping to upset it, but the harmony barely shifts. Eris attempts to pluck the magic from the pony's horn, but her talon recoils from its sharpness. To her horror she feels the Equestrian magic press into her, calming her own discord, subjecting her to harmony. Her eyes grow heavy and she feels her body stiffen, encrusted by it. Spoiler: Electric lady Most dreams are a chore to the Princess of the Night, only explored for duty's sake, to keep Nightmares at bay - that is only natural, since most ponies fear the dark. But some dreams are dedicated to the night, to her, like this pony's dreams... The stars swirly round Luna as the normally reserved Princess swings her flank to a syncopated beat and playful bass. She prances her hooves to the melody of a saxophone trio, black velvet slippers replacing the cumbersome silver hoof-boots. Then the vocals come in and she feels herself melt into the euphoric freedom of the music. 'Ooh, you shock it, shake it, baby Electric lady you're a star You got a classic kind of crazy But you know just who you are You got the look the Gods agree they wanna see All the birds and the bees Dancing with the freaks in the trees And watch the water turn to wine Outer space and out your mind Ooh shock me one good time ... *Nod, nod, nod* Goes Vinyl Scratch, day-dreaming as usual. Spoiler: Dreaming, Waiting Rainbowshine plumps her pillow for what feels like the umpteenth time that night. Every time her eyes close she can see it - the stadium full of ponies cheering and all eyes on her as the rainbow aura from her signature move bathes her in its light. She could already see his wonderstruck gaze as she raced through the cumulus at her peak speed (and only a few mares in her year were faster). Then she would stop herself with the wing-strength that had made her one of the top marathon fliers at Junior Flight camp. The sudden stop would cause the droplets to fly round her and create a rainbow as the sunlight glanced through them. Her name wasn't Rainbow Shine for nothing. Rainbowshine wasn't nervous. She knew she could perform that move in her sleep, but waiting was agony. She plumps her pillow again, her sleepless eyes large with frustrated purpose. Spoiler: Babs Step "Tonight might be special!" I argue with the mirror, pouting and blowing my fringe. 'But there's college tomorrow.' The reflection says, sensible short hair bobbing as I nod to myself. "But I can't stay home, I'm all dressed up." I complain, running my hands through my short hair, subconsciously mussing it up. '"You big palooka.' My reflection tuts, shaking its head. I know I've won. I give a final twirl to the mirror, smirk at myself in the mirror one last time, and exit into the Manehattan night. Spoiler: Rise of Adagio (headcannon and dancing monster warning) The rise of Adagio Dazzle Adagio gazed up at the stars, filled with longing. She wasn't looking at the brightness, however, but for a shadow - the black shape of a flying creature. As she gazed she saw the shape she was looking for. In her excitement she jumped and splashed about, thrashing herself about in the water. The shape came closer. Adagio had learned the language of the creatures that made the shapes. They were called 'ponies' and the shape was an 'airship'. Her sisters merely thought the ponies were land-prey - inhabitants of another world. Adagio had come to dislike her sister's brutal vision of things, she didn't think the ponies were prey like the mindless fish - the fish didn't make things like the airships... but more importantly the fish couldn't talk and it was this that adagio really longed for. Adagio could think, but her body was made for brutality not communication. A light shone on her from the airship as she continued to dance in the water. Eventually one of the ponies called out to her. Adagio knew the pony's voice. He was called Starswirl. She had encountered this pony a long time ago, when he had fallen into the water from another big black shape, one that floated on the water. She would have devoured him but for the fact that instead of the howling or hissing noises of other land creatures who had fallen into her domain, he had 'talked' to her. She didn't understand what the noises were then, but she was instantly mesmerised. She defended the pony from her sisters and had taken him back to his world. Since then Starswirl had taught Adagio to understand him and his world. Today he has promised to bring a new pony 'shape', a gem, for her and each of her sisters. He had told her that by using its magic she could 'talk' like him, so that she could share her longings and desires. She and her sisters would leave the darkness of her world behind, they would bask in the sound of the new world, and no pony would deny her voice.
