Applebuck Season (Season 1, Episode 4) - With Big Mac injured, Applejack attempts to harvest the crops at Sweet Apple Acres by herself, however her sleep deprivation and stubbornness cause problems all over Ponyville.

Fall Weather Friends (Season 1, Episode 13) - Applejack and Rainbow Dash face off to see who the better athlete is.

The Last Roundup (Season 2, Episode 14) - After Applejack sends a note to her family and friends that says she will not return to Ponyville after competing in the Equestria Rodeo Competition in Canterlot, her friends decide to find her and understand her motives.

Given recent developments, I don't imagine there'll be too many more of these until the next hiatus, but I thought I'd do this set anyway.

Applebuck Season has its place as being the first episode without a writing credit for Lauren Faust and also the first episode that shows how good the slice-of-lifers could be. (I'm not much of a fan of "The Ticket Master".) I like Applejack's characterisation here -- yes, her stubbornness is turned up to 11 for the sake of the plot, but you can go back and watch it now without her feeling odd. There are some interesting little aspects which you probably wouldn't get in a newer ep, such the way both Rainbow and Pinkie accept that AJ is the best around in athletics and baking respectively. Big Mac, meanwhile, does more talking in this than he'd get to do again until "Ponyville Confidential"!

I'm a big fan of Fall Weather Friends, and sometimes recommend it as a good first episode. It shows the special nature of Equestria nicely, in terms of ponies having to make autumn happen for themselves, but doesn't require much explanation if you haven't seen the show before. It's quite a "Looney Tunes"-esque episode, fast-paced and funny throughout, and everything still has that homespun feel that S1 specialises in. Rainbow and Applejack spark brilliantly off each other, with Twilight, Spike and Pinkie all providing great supporting roles. Twi's race number of 42 is a nice touch, too.

The Last Roundup will always be more famous for everything that happened with Derpy than it is for its actual star. That's a shame, as it's a good episode even without that first scene. We get to see a little more of Equestria outside Ponyville, while Cherry Jubilee is definitely one of the better guest ponies. Applejack is the star of the show, though, playing against type a bit in terms of her uncharacteristic evasiveness when asked a straight question. The ep has perhaps aged a bit, in that I doubt today's AJ would run away just because she didn't win a prize, but seen through S2 lenses it's still a keeper. Also, "Raritycatchme!" :D
