In the middle of nowhere where the plains give way to the arid sands of the badlands lays a large, circular stone structure. In the warmer months the arena is host to an array of combat, assault course and other sporting events. In the cooler parts of the year it is used as a training grounds for various teams and groups of ponies and gryphons.

The sun was high in the sky with no clouds as far as the eye could see, perfect weather for the days event: The Battle of the Beasts. Flyers all over the surrounding area read:

The Battle of the Beasts is an annual event for some of the greatest pony and gryphon hunting teams to show off their prowess. As well as those brave or foolish enough to consider themselves as a combatant against some of the worlds most fearsome creatures.
Those that survive the trials will be given great rewards and the title of Champion Beast Slayer.
    Rewards:
Survive the qualifiers: 50 bits + free weapon and armor repair (Or your full rental fees refunded)
First round: 150 bits + free weapon and armor repair (Or your full rental fees refunded)
Second round: 250 bits + free weapon and armor repair (Or your full rental fees refunded)
Final round: 500 bits+ free weapon and armor repair (Or your full rental fees refunded) and title
As ponies gathered and contestants were registering and exploring the armories a purple unicorn with a fractured horn sat sideways on a bench within the barracks. Dressed in highly detailed armor minus his helmet that rested on the floor underneath him. Laying across the bench was his sword and leaning on the bench next to that was his shield. His focus was solely on the whetstone in his hoofs as he sharpened the blades edge.
He'd done this event before but never past the second round, this year he had plans to change that. Around him were various ponies suiting up or boasting that the qualifiers would be ' a piece of cake', others were telling horror stories from previous years causing one poor stallion to turn pale.
It wouldn't be long now before the opening ceremony and they'd all be ushered into the arena.
((A trial thread for something a bit more action packed. Keep descriptions within the rules, rating etc The monster I have in mind won't be ripping ponies to shreds, far from. Since this is beta any feedback or questions are welcome at the bottom of peoples posts. As for attacking it's just free for all, no rolling or anything but be sensible, insta hits and insta kills get really boring really fast. Main point is have fun)) Open to watchers and contestants!

‘Geez, so this is the place, huh? Heartstoker thought to herself as she approached the walls of the colosseum. The tall, menacing structure looked even more formidable than it did from afar, and despite the apparent old age of the stone, Heartstoker could see it was extremely sturdy.

‘Could have picked somewhere easier on the eyes, but hey, I’ll roll with it.’

Heartstoker had seen the flyer for the event taking place today several weeks ago, and though the bottom half was torn, the top half had given her sufficient information. A sporting event, with ponies from all over Equestria coming to compete with and against each other? It was just what some of her recruits needed to stay in shape now that the season had ended. Though her official position had long since gone, many still considered her the ‘real’ coach of the Ponyville All-Stars. Only a single recruit had taken her up on the offer, however, the rest taking the chance to spend time with friends and loved ones. It was understandable, and Heartstoker had no objections to ponies enjoying themselves.

As she walked through the doors, Heartstoker looked around and was fully able to appreciate the size of the venue. Wide, circular rows were carved into the stone bowl, extending around the entire perimeter. At the far end, opposite the arch through which Heartstoker had just emerged, was a large iron gate.

“Huh, iron bars? That’s pretty old school,” she said, as she quietly chuckled to herself. To ensure she could see all the action and that her cheers of encouragement would be heard, Heartstoker took a seat on the front row, which was strangely unoccupied. Most of the other ponies who had gathered in the audience were concentrated in the top half, far away from the ground itself. While looking back at the crowd, Heartstoker also spotted yet another seemingly out of place feature. Guards. Armed guards.

‘Wow, security sure is tight around here. Come to think of it, I saw a lot of weapons being taken into the back rooms on the way in. What are they expecting around here, a monster attack?’

Settling back down, Heartstoker tried to focus on the event about to take place. Coaching was a difficult job, and doing it well was just as mentally exhausting as the act of playing, if not more so. Thinking too much about the local culture wasn’t going to help her at all. As she stared at the sandy centre of the arena, a flyer blew against her hoof. Heartstoker picked it up. It was the same flyer she had shown to her recruit when she suggested the idea, only this one was not torn. Curious, she scanned over the top half before reaching the section that was missing on her copy.

“Huh, so there’s no sports today? Then wha-” Her eyes grew wide and her mouth remained open, though it took several seconds before any further sound escaped it.

“Oh Celestia, no no no no this isn’t good!”

Dashing from her seat, the flyer fell to the floor as Heartstoker bounded back through the arch and towards the contestant’s entrance. Written below a description of the event as a whole, on the half of the flyer that was previously unknown to Heartstoker, was a special event listing - The Battle of the Beasts. It was happening today. And Heartstoker had unknowingly sent a regular baseball playing pony right into the thick of it.

Please keep in mind rule 1 of the RP forums (no sexual, violent or otherwise graphic roleplay) as well as the Adult Content Prohibitions of the entire forum. For the moment I want to see how this goes, but just keep in mind a general rule of thumb for the forum as a whole is that it shouldn't be much worse than you'd see in the show.

They're already aware of that, as the OP details at the bottom:

Kept himself busy for the few hours that were spent in the barracks before the event. Sharpening his weapon and making sure his armor was fit for purpose as well as helping others with their gear. Everypony looked up to the ceiling as a fanfare blasted out and the crowd began to cheer and stomp their hooves, causing dust to fall from the cracks in the grouting on the ceiling. The heavy iron gates were lifted releasing the contestants and everyone was ushered out into the arena.

The fanfare continued to play as everyone moved into formation to face a center balcony jutting out and looming over the arena where a green unicorn stallion stood. Behind the combatants were two large wood and iron gates on the far wall that were slowly being unlocked.
The green unicorn flared up his magic around his neck and was able to project his voice much louder then naturally possible.

''Mares and Gentlecolts! welcome to this years Battle of the Beasts! Those familiar with our event will know that each year we theme our fights. Last year we celebrated those hunting teams that braved the fires of Tartarus to bring us some of the most heated battled this arena has ever seen! Firehawks, hell hounds and molten lava lions were all defeated. For this years combatants we will showcase the finest prizes from those hunting teams that have delved into the vast jungles of the world to bring you the perilous plants!

The rules are as following: All those remaining within the arena by the time the creature is defeated or submits move on to the next round. Those unable to continue battle will be teleported from the arena out of harms way but will also be disqualified from the event.
Those out you that can fly you are to remain within the Colosseum, those breaking this rule or those that enter the spectators stands will be disqualified.

And now we bring to you our first match of the event!''

The crowd once again cheered and stomped their hooves as the large gates began to open. Entering the arena was a team of gryphons pulling a large crate on wheels. They paused once roughly in the center of the arena and the leader of the group rose into the air and hovered. With the same magic he used on himself the announcer projected the gryphons voice across for every pony to hear.

''Greetings every pony! when my team was given the theme for this years event we knew exactly which creature would be perfect for this trial. For those of you about to face our beast we suggest you remain light on your hooves as this Lasher is no joke...'' The ending of his speech was said in an amused tone of voice.

Flying over to the top of the crate the leader placed his talons on the latch, the rest of his team turned around to start pulling the crate back out of the arena. A loud hissing sound came from the crate and already the formation of ponies began to break apart. Safeguard finally used his magic to hold his shield in front of him and sword above his head in preparation.
The crate opened with a large bang as the door slammed into the sand revealing the creature.

A mass of spiked vines and leaves crawled out of the crate and for a moment stood dazed as it tried to work out where it was, by the time it realised the iron gates had shut. At the center of the mass of vines and coils was a large blue flower bud that acted as the creatures head. Slightly worrying for those facing it was that where ever it moved it left a trail of poison joke blooming from the sand.
A rather foolish pony ran head first towards it with his sword held in his teeth. The lasher's head rose from it's body in surprise and spat a strange clear liquid at the pony. He stopped in his tracks, rolled over and burst into a giggle fit.

Now annoyed the lasher turned it's attention on the gathered ponies before it.

((Note the announcer saying 'Defeated or submits' this is to keep in line with the rules and doesn't mean it has to be killed. Incapacitated, fainted, runs away, submits are all possible outcomes. Being a plant there's gonna be no blood or gore, and being a poison joke attacks hit aren't going to be instant blood bath results. ))

Heartstoker skidded to a halt at the entrance to the stands as a fanfare boomed out from every direction, followed quickly by the pounding of countless pony hooves on the stone floor.

“No… too late,” she sighed, lowering her head.
As one who had taken part in many sporting events, Heartstoker knew that once the announcer had begun, and the crowd was cheering, there was no chance of them stopping the games. There was, however, still hope of talking with an official and pulling out her recruit during an interval.

If he lasts that long.’ It was a depressing thought, but Heartstoker had little choice. She’d have to find someone fast and- BOOM. A loud noise that could be heard even over the stomping and cheering shocked Heartstoker, and heading back towards the front row her mind filled with dread as she saw the source. A giant mass of vines and thorns occupied the centre of the arena, having just been set loose by a team that had now flown to safety. The vines were like nothing she’d ever seen before; they moved threateningly and in unison as if they were a single, predatory creature.

As Heartstoker tried to make sense of the scene and work out exactly what was happening, something else caught her eye. It was Curveball, the recruit that she had dragged into this mess. He stood behind a heavily armoured pony, wielding nothing but a large wooden mallet between his teeth. Heartstoker knew this would be of no use to him, his skills were in tactics and deception –misleading the opposition- and a close-range weapon like that would only get him hurt. What frightened her even more was the effect the plant seemed to be having on anypony who ventured too near to it. As it moved, it seemed to leave behind a trail of blue flowers that were unknown to Heartstoker. She didn’t need to know what it was though, the effects were extremely visible. Any pony that touched them was effectively disabled by laughter or some humiliating condition. The plant seemed to ignore them afterwards, but for all she knew it could at any time decide to turn and attack the ponies that were left defenceless and unable to act.

‘He’s not going to make it to an interval on his own. That’s it, time to level out the playing field.’
Leaning against the railings of the front row, Heartstoker began to do what she did best. She began to coach. Loud.

Safeguard kept himself moving to avoid the lashers attacks and had found himself being trailed by a pony with a mallet. A quick survey of the battle showed that some ponies where working together which was a good sign. Those on the ground with swords or other weapons were clearing a path from the blooming flowers around the arena to provide space. A few pegasi in the air were weaving and dive bombing the lasher to keep it in place and to stop it going anywhere which proved successful to some degree. The vines on the other hoof were still moving freely and tripping ponies up. The unicorn looked back to the pony behind him who was in turn looking up at a mare on the front row shouting something, being half deaf in one ear didn't help Safeguard much.
He backed up into Curveball to get his attention ''You go help them!- '' Pointing with his sword to some ponies fighting with a bunch of vines ''-I'll distract it over here-'' pointing to the opposite side of the arena. He didn't wait long for a reply before running off while beating the flat of his sword across his shield to make noise and gain it's attention.

Once at the opposite side of the beast he saw some pony doing his job already, by throwing snowballs at the lasher. The white coated unicorn mare with ice blue mane and tail waring some of the colosseums rental armor was summoning and throwing snowballs. The lasher, finally fed up with the pegasi spat at them to take them out of the air then turned on the snowball mare. Running as fast as he could Safeguard stood in front of her with his shield facing the monster plant. He was too slow however and both of them got hit by the poison attack. For a split moment he thought this was it, disqualified from a first round..how embarrassing...

Moments past and both of them were still in the fight and they both looked unharmed..
''That wasn't so bad..''The mare said, in his voice.
They both stood there in shock then Safeguard snapped out of it ''We've got to finish this thing sooner then later we'll have no ponies left!'' frowning as everything he just said sounded wrong.
Another bout of poison came their way but shield was up and ready to deflect it.

One of the few remaining airborne pegasi was shot down close to the pair after having his wings shrunk, crashing into a pile of flowers. To his surprise he could stand up again, he could even fly! the only problem was that rubbing against the plants had caused all his fur to stand on end. He looked like a giant pony bumble bee.

Watching this Safeguard grinned ''I might have an idea..''

The ponies were dropping, fast. Many of them seemed to be unfamiliar with combat, and charged straight into the plant.

“DON’T GO IN HEAD ON, YOU CAN’T GET THROUGH THOSE VINES!” Even with her loud voice, honed from coaching ponies through many games, Heartstoker was struggling to be heard over the roar of the crowd and the sounds of thundering hooves, larger than the baseball games she was used to.

‘Come on Heartstoker, there must be a way to take this thing down’
She was used to spotting weaknesses in ponies, but this plant was another matter entirely. Its movements were different to any animal she’d come across. Even the most vicious of predators tried to protect themselves when prey fought back, but this plant was all offence. It made no effort to protect the vines that gave it its form as ponies fought with them, in fact the only way it seemed reserved was that it kept some of its vines tucked away at its core, as if saving them as 'reinforcements'.

‘There must be something I’m not seeing here’
This was the critical period, wherein she had to act before things became too bad to recover. A pegasus crashed to the ground, but Heartstoker took little notice. She had even stopped shouting orders to Curveball, who was now running towards another group of ponies on the side of the arena opposite Heartstoker after another combatant had given him the instruction. That pony may be giving orders, but Heartstoker had her own way of doing things. Her face was unmoving, eyes locked only on the creature that continued to take out ponies. It was a look that was not seen often, even during important games, but it was all too familiar to her team. It was the look she had whenever she focused entirely on a single player, analysing their every movement, their technique, their facial expressions, even their breathing pattern. If this plant had any weaknesses, Heartstoker would be able to discern them.

‘Why does it move like that? Surely if it wanted to take everypony down quicker, it’d use all of its vines? Is it protecting the blue thing? No.. that bud.. thing is too exposed, it can’t be the weak point. But what, come on, think! There must be something else in there, if only I could see it.’
And then it came to her. If the plant wasn't going to open up and display its vulnerable insides, then the combatants would have to make it open up.

“CURVEBALL, TELL EVERYONE TO SPREAD OUT AROUND THE EDGES!” She began to yell, running around the stands to get within earshot. She hoped she’d get there in time.

Safeguard had an idea and turned to the snowy mare who currently owned his voice and he owned hers.
''Follow my lead and help the others up!'' He ran away from the confused looking mare.
A pony that was about to be teleported out of the battle, unable to continue as they had flippers instead of hooves, was rolled across the sand by safeguard and into a patch of poison joke. The earth pony flailed on his back and shouted at the unicorn for being crazy. This didn't bother Safeguard as said pony was standing upright once again on all four hooves and not flippers. ''Go help the others!'' He ordered and left the pony to it, trying his best the whole time not to laugh at the ridiculously big buck teeth they now had. At least they could now fight again and the mare understood quickly enough and ran off in the opposite direction.

Helping other ponies out the unicorn saw Curveball running around telling ponies to get back to the wall. Not content until every fit pony was up and well Safeguard continued to roll, shove, headbutt and otherwise get ponies into contact with the flowers anyway he could. Once they were up he carried on the message of retreating to the walls.

The Lashers center remained in the middle of the arena while the vines would continue to follow and harass the ponies. However they didn't stretch to the walls unless the main body moved, once everypony was flat against the walls the vines just lay on the floor motionless. The large blue flower bud lay down on the floor and opened up fully. Now the roots had become exposed, no longer protected by the vines, sitting just underneath the flower head.

Combatants and spectators alike held their breath as they waited to see what was going to happen, the lasher just lay there with it's vines lazily twitching now and then. Any pony that got close to them would be attacked but as soon as they backed off they returned to resting. After a few moments of nothing happening the flower began to spew pollen into the air. Safeguard cringed and flattened his ears ''That looks bad..'' curious he prodded a vine which instantly reacted but at the same time the pollen stopped emitting.

    ''Ok....'' He said, slightly confused.

‘He’s pushing them into those flowers? What the heck is he doing?’
Heartstoker stopped to lean up on the railings, ready to shout down at the armoured pony below her and tell him to stop before anypony else got hurt.

    ‘Wait a minute…’
He and several others were indeed pushing other ponies into the flowers, but it wasn’t causing problems for them at all. In fact, those that were being pushed in were already downed by various conditions, but as they made contact with the blue flowers their conditions seemed to change. In a lot of cases the change was beneficial and allowed them to resume the fight in a much less debilitating state.

‘He worked that out... wow, got to give him some credit for that’
As Heartstoker watched, the two plans combined- any downed ponies were pushed into the flowers, regaining the ability to move properly, and then moved to the edges of the arena. After a short while a circle of ponies had formed around the perimeter, leaving the plant alone in the centre. As she had hoped, the vines did not reach far enough to pose any danger.

    ‘Now, let’s see here’
It was simple to see into the plant with all of its vines outstretched, trying to go in every direction at once, and without their protection the core lay exposed. The blue flowerhead, which had been spitting the strange fluid, was now fully opened, and a large mass of roots occupied the space underneath it. The arena was quiet, now the sounds of combat had ceased and the crowd sat waiting to see what happened next. Looking around briefly, Heartstoker could see it was clear they were not expecting this turn of events.

As Heartstoker took in the situation, a cloud of yellow mist began to rise from the blue flowerhead, most likely pollen. As soon as it started, however, the armoured pony reached out for a vine. As soon as it was touched, it recoiled, also ceasing the pollen flow. Once he stopped, however, the pollen began again to slowly seep out. It seemed to stay low instead of floating up, and it was clear that in a matter of minutes the pollen would be able to flood the entire arena if it kept up. Seeing this, Heartstoker’s mind once again began to formulate a plan.

‘That pollen… I don’t know what it does, but it’s not going to be good. They can’t let it keep spraying out like that. It stops when something touches the vines, right? So… we need ponies to keep hold of those vines. As for dealing with the plant itself… the roots! That was what it was protecting, they must be important, same as any other plant. Something needs to give them a few good hits. But… there’s already a lot of pollen around, nopony can get too close like this. How are they going to clear the pollen?’

Heartstoker’s gaze fell upon a particularly fuzzy pegasus, cautiously stretching out his wings through his greatly extended fur, surely a result of the plant’s effect. A sly grin came to her face.

‘That’s it, plan set. Earth ponies all grab a vine, Pegasus ponies clear the pollen with their wings, Unicorns go for the roots. Game over, ya big overgrown vegetable’
She began to relay the plan to Curveball and the other ponies below her, before feeling a heavy hoof on her shoulder.

“Excuse me miss, but interfering with the combatants is against the rules of the colosseum. Please return to your seat immediately or you will be taken away.”

Several ponies around Safeguard looked up to the railings and saw a red mare shouting something, only to have a guard come and intervene. The orders where heard though and Curveball began pacing around the wall telling every pony their task. ''Sounds good!'' cringing at his stupidly high voice.
Ponies started moving into various positions and those still able to fly took to the air however once they overshadowed a vine it shot into the air and thrashed about in an attempt to attack. ''Pegasi back down!''the icy mare with the commanding voice shouted out to them and they responded ''Let the earth ponies go in first then to take off!'' she ordered.

On the count of three every pony moved. Stomping on the vines the earth ponies and unicorns startled the vines into motion. The Pegasus sprang into the air and began to beat their wings rapidly, the formation in which they had arranged themselves would direct the pollen up into a funnel rather then blowing it out into the crowd.
Once the earth ponies were able to defend themselves from the vines they were each attacking the supporting unicorns broke from them and headed towards the flower.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw a white haze, then the exposed fur on his legs stood on end. Despite being in the desert in the middle of summer the temperature had rapidly dropped around him. It was the icy unicorn mare with the snowballs. A cold wind whipped around her and her armor began to grow icicles. A beam of magic was shot out towards the roots, completely freezing them.

The vines dropped to the ground, some faintly twitching and the head of the Lasher let out a pitiful cry before closing up once again. Everypony in the arena stopped for a moment then all at once jumped, called out or flinched as the vines began to retreat. Wrapping themselves up around the flower head until they were tightly packed.
Minutes went by and nothing happened, the creature would twitch now and then but nothing more.

The crowd burst into a roaring applaud, cheering and stomping their hooves.
''Mares and Gentlecolts we have our winners!'' the announcer proclaimed only to work up the crowd even more.
''Our next fight for this event will start in two days time! Until then there will be smaller sparring matches and our combatants can rest and prepare for the next match.-'' The gates to the mares and colts locker rooms began to open up ''Once out of the arena you will be given a warm bath to remove the affects of the poison joke and receive your rewards. Enjoy!''
As they were allowed to exit the arena the hunting team responsible for the Lasher flew down to check on the creature, several gryphons with watering cans sprinkled the plant which it seemed to respond positively to. It didn't attack, now too cold to do so, but instead seemed to be enjoying the much needed drink.

Trotting over to Curveball Safeguard walked alongside him ''Who's that mare of yours?'' he asked curiously. Fully intending to thank her once he got his voice back.

((Got to make a few tweaks to the next beasty but hopefully this whole thing wasn't too rule breaking. Those that want to join in on the next fight but weren't in the qualifier that's perfectly fine! you can just say you were one of the ponies in the fight as there's a fair few that survived.))

Heartstoker had squared up against the guard and was staring him down, ready to protest against his reasoning. Cheering and encouragement wasn’t against the rules, and if it was they’d need to remove the entire audience. Before she could say this, however, the crowd grew hushed.
The guard paused, looking around as if expecting some trouble was about to break out, but Heartstoker knew exactly what was happening, a large smile coming to her face as a cold breeze brushed against her rear legs. Turning around confirmed her thoughts, and she saw the plant in the centre of the arena. Its roots were frozen, and all of its vines had coiled up around it. The fight was over, and she couldn’t help but cheer.

“YES! GREAT JOB EVERYPONY, SHOWED THAT PLANT WHO’S BOSS!”
With that the guard frowned, making an audible grunt as he walked away. Heartstoker couldn’t help but laugh.

‘Yeah, great job’ she thought to herself. She was particularly pleased with Curveball, and the way he had held his nerve and relayed her instructions clearly, not giving in under the extreme pressure as he occasionally did. The announcement stated that the next match was due to start in two days, and that’s when another thought came to her.

‘I… I was planning to get him out of there… but now…’ As this crossed Heartstoker’s mind, she looked down at Curveball, happily interacting with the other victors as they began to make their way to the gate, and then over at the plant, the smile still across her face.

    ‘We can WIN this’

    ~~~
    Meanwhile
    ~~~

Curveball was amazed as the plant seized up, drew back into itself and then ceased moving, its lower parts encased in ice. He stared at it for a short time, trying to take in everything which had just happened, seemingly in an instant. He had only discovered he was going to be put into a combat situation while in the locker rooms, when the wooden mallet- which he had dropped when relaying Heartstoker’s orders- had been given to him. It was very different to a baseball game, so dangerous and yet, somehow it felt... fine. Great, even.

The announcer brought him back to his senses, and as the gates opened he began to make his way to the back rooms with everypony else. He didn’t need one of the baths, as he had miraculously managed to avoid the plant’s effects as far as he could tell. The armoured pony, who had been a huge help during the match, approached him. He spoke with a surprisingly high pitched voice, and Curveball remembered it was the condition he had been inflicted with, thusly holding back the urge to laugh.

    “Who’s that mare of yours?”

“That mare? You mean Heartstoker.” He puffed up his chest slightly as he continued. “Yeah, Heartstoker, she’s my coach, and she’s amazing.”
The two of them carried on into the locker rooms, as the mares went their separate way, and on into the baths which had been prepared for them. Curveball may not have needed the bath, but he sure as hay needed to relax.

As Anta said, do feel free to join in if this is the type of RP you're looking for! All sorts of ways you can add yourself in: you could be one of the contenders who wasn't mentioned in the first round, you could introduce yourself now we're in the locker rooms, heck you could even be a contestant that showed up late and has to talk/sneak their way in. Go crazy, and don't be afraid if your pony isn't built for combat, that's just called a challenge!

Tilting his head he mulled things over in his head as Curveball answered him then nodded. ''She was a big help, I just hope those guards don't kick her out or anything.'' Though a mare like that he doubted she'd go down without a fight.
The locker rooms had been moved around to accommodate several large bath tubs full of hot, medicated water. ''I need to get this armor off!'' Now the fight was over the armor felt like it weighted a ton, the fact that the leather tunic he wore underneath it soaked up a large amount of sweat weighing him down further. Dropping the armor onto a bench manually rather then with his magic it just slid off the soggy leather once unclipped with a horrible sound.
Safeguard was used to it but it still felt icky, thankfully one of the rewards was somepony else had the task of washing it for him.

Taking the gold bands out of his mane and tail he placed them with his armor to avoid loosing them. The stallion turned and trotted towards the baths where he would place his front hooves over the edge and push off the ground with his hind legs. This launched him head first into the water, splashing anypony else in the tub. Coming up for air he gargled with the water only to spit it out seconds later. ''Bleh!'' It tasted horrible but he got his voice back. The fluffy pegasus hovered over the tub and tried to lower himself into the water, only to find that he floated. Other ponies laughed and he simply pouted, Safeguard offered to help and grabbed his front hooves to pull him underwater.
Making sure he was completely clean and didn't smell like a sweaty yak the unicorn scrubbed himself clean, hopped out the tub to provide space for another and shook off like a dog. Walking around the desert would dry him quick enough.

Wandering out the locker room he looked out at the crowd now milling around, few knew what he looked like without his armor and so he wasn't bothered much. The icy mare, also still slightly damp from her bath was wandering around. Safeguard wandered over to her ''Hey, fancy getting a drink? on me.'' he grinned ''Sorry hun, no distractions I'm here to win.'' She carried on walking and whipped his nose with her tail. Shot down in flames he huffed but never mind, he still had Heartstoker to find and thank, most likely just in words. Maybe there were other ponies he'd bump into from previous events too, certainly didn't fancy sitting around on his bum for the next two days.

''..Ugh..so glad..that I got through this round..'' The voice said, trailing off into a set of low mumbles and groans. The owner of the downcast voice belongs to a large, rather blue looking earth pony and a most definatly soaked from the previous bath. Soon enough, the soaked mare trotted out into the open with a familiar clank in her step. ''Im glad nothing happened to you...'' Crystal Cogs said with a hint of cheer, looking down at her left leg. The metal was quite resistant to rusting, but still she had to find somewhere cool to service it, even more so in desert conditions.
The crowd seemed to be shuffling about, preparing to leave or camp up for the next two days of small fry contests. ''Hope nobody noticed me during that fight.'' Cogs thought to herself, the images in her head shifting back to the qualifiers and how she done....nothing. Indeed, if there was one thing she was truely afraid of, it was Poison joke. To her, it had a very acute effect: It stunted her 'knack' for machines, to most people it would be a mild annoyance, but to Cog's.....It was a time without purpose, it made her feel angry and useless. Though, she was useless in the last fight: Unable to close the gap, poison joke everywhere -and- her armanments had been banned for ''Lack of sportsmanship''.
    ''Stupid arena mast- OWH!''
Her short rant was cut off by her lack of observation, ending up with her head butting into the side of Unicorn, an unusual tough looking one. With a short lift of her head, she faced the stallion with a sheepishly apologetic look. ''Sorry about that, just had things on my mind.'' She quickly spoke, trying to not look more of a fool than she already did. ''Don't mind me, honest!''

Heartstoker waited outside the locker rooms- leaning on her bat as she often did- hoping to talk with Curveball. The conversation was going to be interesting, and she was unsure whether to apologise or congratulate him first. As well as that there was the matter of discussing further progress through the tournament; Heartstoker had seen Curveball’s face after the fight was over and he certainly didn’t seem afraid, but she had to be sure he was fine before making the decision to carry on.

Ponies began to exit, and she recognised some of them: the icy unicorn, the no-longer-fuzzy pegasus, but no sign of Curveball.

‘Or the armoured one. I wouldn’t mind having a word with him either. He knew what he was doing, the way he rolled those ponies into the flowers. That’s the sorta pony you want as an ally.’
She continued to stand, staring towards the doors as she reflected on what had happened today, and what the next few days might hold for her.

“Ahhh, now this is what I needed!” Curveball said to nopony in particular. He was laying back against the side of the bath, his head hanging back on the rim, eyes closed. The fight had taken its toll on his body, though he had not realised it until the adrenaline rush of constant running, shouting, and eventual grappling with the vines had worn off.

“I could just stay in here forever!”

“Well, fifteen minutes better be good enough” a gruff voice said from behind him. “We have to get this place set up for other events”

Opening his eyes, Curveball saw the upside down image of one of the Arena Hands. They weren’t guards, more helpers for the contestants: they provided suitable arms and armour for those that requested them, directed ponies to the appropriate areas, and generally assisted them in preparation. This one didn’t appear to be too friendly.

“Urgh… fine...” Curveball submerged his head in the tub before the hand could say anything more. He was keen to make the most of the time he had left, before he had to get out and use his aching muscles. Heartstoker would be waiting for him outside, but he needed this. Surely she’d try and take him out of the games, and he had to show her that he could handle it. He’d march out there, head held high, body in a good state, not a trace of fear on his face. He just wanted to rest a little bit longer.

Seemingly lost in the crowd Safeguard slowly allowed the masses to just move him in any direction, until somepony headbutted his side that was. ''Whoah..hey...'' He looked down at the blue mare and grinned wide ''COGS!'' he shouted out excitedly, his naturally loud voice scaring a few ponies around him. Unless she moved or fought back he reared up and grabbed her in a bear hug. ''So good to see you! are you here for the event? I didn't see you in the arena but that doesn't say much. That fight was crazy! hope it'll only get better.'' he rambled on, pleased to see a familiar face. He held her at arms length ''I'm so sorry.'' letting her go ''I've gotta find a red mare quick before she leaves.'' Popping down onto all fours again he wandered through the crowds ''How's about a get together in a little bit?'' he waited a while if there was going to be any reply then headed off.

Maybe Curveball was still in the locker room he could follow to his coach. Stopping before the locker rooms he spotted the red mare, checking to make sure he didn't smell funky before approaching her.
''Ms Heartstoker?'' tilting his head to glance at her cutie mark, most ponies names had some relation to their marks.

''Whoa whoa...Safeguard!? The fel you doing he- Waaah!'' Cogs said, abruptly being grappled in a bear hug by the much larger stallion. Despite trying to squirm and break the almost choking hold, she know too well that couldn't escape this time! She frowned as her goggles started to skew from their resting point, ending up just over her eyes. ''Hurk...hur...guh, ye..yeah, I am here for the event and..trust me..I was in the arena.'' Cogs spoke with a sense of reluctancy in her voice, the thoughts of simply standing and watching the fight unfold plagued her mind. Those same thoughts soon came to cloudy end as her few seconds of day dreaming ended with Safeguard starting to wander off. ''Oi! Wait up you!''

''..You really know how t snea- Oh...oooh...'' Crystal Cog's halted just a little bit away from Safeguard, noticing the red mare that he seemed to be calling out for. A little smirk formed as she waited patiently behind, speaking quietly to herself. ''Typical Safeguard....always trying to chat up the mares...''

Still leaning on her bat, Heartstoker had begun to watch the crowd. Their numbers had increased steadily as more began to exit the stands, some heading home and others trying to talk to the contestants. A small blue filly was lifted into the air by a much larger pony before being lowered. Heartstoker smiled. She didn’t mind being kept waiting; being used to spending hours at a time helping ponies meant that a few extra minutes were nothing to her.

‘I suppose he’s resting, he sure put in the effort to-’ Her thoughts were interrupted by a vaguely familiar voice.

    “Ms Heartstoker?”

The voice came from the large purple stallion, who had seemingly wandered over to her and was now staring at her… flank?

“Uhmm… hi there?” she said, slightly confused at the identity of this unicorn. He seemed to recognise her, but she could not say the same.

‘Wait a minute’ she thought, thinking back to the fight that had just taken place. Though he looked different without the armour, there was no mistaking the body shape, the eyes, the physical presence. Her face brightened.

“You were in the arena just now, right? In the armour? You did great out there, the way you pushed those ponies into the flowers was real impressive. Think I owe you some thanks for helping to get my buddy through that in one piece- oh, wait.. ” Heartstoker lifted her bat from the ground, causing her to drop to all fours, before extending a hoof. “The name’s Heartstoker, great to meet ya.”

Finally leaving the bath, Curveball stepped through a doorway. There were benches scattered around the changing area, and he half sat, half collapsed on one of them.

‘Ah haystacks, my legs are spent’
Despite being a hopeful candidate for the Ponyville All-Stars, Curveball was lacking in physical fitness. When he trained, he trained in accuracy and speed of the arm. Running rarely came into it, especially over extended periods of time, and especially especially when that time was spent avoiding and grappling with a giant monstrous plant. As a dedicated pitcher brought into the game as a “trump card” of sorts, he’d never really needed to worry about staying in peak physical condition, and he was certainly feeling the effects of that decision today.
Gazing at the exit, he began to worry. It wouldn’t be good for Heartstoker to see him like this.

‘Okay Curveball, you can do this’
He tried to stand up, much to the protest of his body. Now he was out of the relaxing bath, and the exertion of the fight had caught up to him, he could feel every ache in his muscles, pounding through him over and over. He winced. It was a wonder he’d even made it to the bench.

‘Five more minutes’ He laid down on the bench and soon began to sleep.

Hey guys, Ill be away for BUCK as of tomorrow afternoon, and won't be back until Monday. May be able to squeeze in another update or two before then depending on how things go, but sorry if I slow down anything with my absence!

The stallion smiled as he appeared to have gotten the right pony. He also extended a front hoof to her ''Safeguard'' he announced himself. ''Poison joke is a nasty plant, even more so when it can move around and eat a pony...which makes me wonder why this one didn't unless they fed it before the fight...'' he tilted his head and got lost in though for a few moments. Shaking his head he returned to the mare in front of him ''Anyway...I just wanted to thank you for your help, it's great to have someone outside the fight who can bring a different perspective and not panicking.'' Slightly obscure way to explain things but he reckoned it worked.
He glanced over his shoulder briefly and saw Cogs then rolled his eyes at her, he wanted to have a natter with an old friend but this came first.
''Are you planning on keeping your team mate in for the rest of the fights? There's a few days before the next fight I'd be more then willing to give him a few fighting tips. Seemed a bit out of his depth at times.'' He smirked.
