    Very nice.

Any idea when the '38 stock stops running? I may have to make a trip there before that day happens.

To my considerable surprise, the Great Central Railway is still advertising an autumn gala for early October:

    http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/special-events/autumn-steam-gala/

I wonder whether this will go ahead? I'm racking my brain trying to work out how social distancing could work for a gala. Sure the GCR could severely limit the numbers of tickets sold, but would the event be viable then? Requiring everyone to book in advance wouldn't be an impossible problem since most gala attendees plan it in advance anyway. The big difficulty for me would be keeping people apart at the place. Requiring visitors to book on specific services would (for me anyway) change the feel so much that it wouldn't really be a gala in the usual sense.

If I had to guess, no-one’s bothered to update that page of the website since the beginning of the year.

Have a Bulleid. This is 34027 Taw Valley approaching the Northwood Lane foot crossing with a southbound passenger service this morning.

    You astound me. :p

Nice photos as usual. :) Good to see a 37 in the mix, too. Amazing to think that class first entered service with BR before the Beeching report came out. In fact, if Wikipedia is to be believed (I know, I know) the 60th anniversary of the first 37 going into service will be on 2nd December. I am, as you probably already know, a bit of a 37 fan. :)

I do indeed :p although am more of a Duff fan (class 47) you can't go wrong with a good loud class 37:p
They have stood the test of time although their time on the mainline is numbered as in a few years the only time you see a 37 is on a charter or at a gala. Was lucky a few years ago to travel behind one of the first of the class on the Mid Norfolk

Thought I once more share how we are doing on the rails in the South East. Both the morning and evening peaks we see a few hundred mainly builders, NHS staff and store workers. The main problem we have since the second lockdown is youngsters in large groups travelling up to London without tickets and damaging our gates as well as giving us abuse. Both myself and a colleague have been on the end of some nasty stuff which I won't post.

We are holding our own with staff off sick and that while both Charing Cross and London Bridge stations are borderline staffing level. Me and my new gateline colleagues will keep doing what we do but we are a breaking point.

Really sorry to hear that Zen. Know that you're not alone and that in following the Covid rules you're doing the right thing.

Just echoing CuldeeFell on this, Zen. A lot of us out here, even those like me who aren't using the railways at all at the moment, massively admire what you're managing under incredibly difficult circumstances.

Subject to the government "roadmap" sticking, the SVR's "Spring Steam Up" event will go ahead on 15th-18th April!

    https://www.svr.co.uk/NewsItem.aspx?a=958

Special guest is the loco that was planned for the cancelled 2020 Spring Gala: no. 2999 Lady of Legend. Apparently 60% of tickets have already been sold, which is quite impressive!

I very much doubt I'll travel myself, as April feels too early for me to be comfortable, but if it's possible safely I might go and see if I can see 2999 passing by at some point during the event. :)

The Diesel Bash (13th-16th May) is also on. I haven't seen much about that, but I believe one of the itineraries will be a Class 50 special.

April feels too early for me as well. I’m a bit disappointed that I’ll be missing Lady of Legend, as I don’t know how many other opportunities we’ll get to see it running away from Didcot.

It's really nice to see things at least showing signs of getting going again. The SVR diesel gala appears to a case of booking a compartment and staying in it for the day which is not my thing and I'd imagine this will be the case for other early galas. The BLS site is showing a few diesel events planned for June onwards so if Boris isn't telling porkies again, hopefully by that time we will get something approaching a proper gala!

The SVR's first "normal" services this year, from late April through to the end of June, will be done like this: they'll sell tickets for a table for two (£50), a compartment for four (£100) or a compartment for six (£150). Once you have your booking, that table/compartment is yours all day. However, the Highley Engine House and its restaurant will stay closed until indoor tourism reopens, which is hoped will be on 17th May. I suspect that will hit ticket sales a bit, as last summer they could have it open and it's a huge attraction for many people.

The setup is a little more flexible than last year, as each loco/set will run two full round trips each day, and intermediate stations will be open (to ticket-holders) which most of them weren't in 2020. So you could do something like Kidderminster-Highley-Arley-Bridgnorth-Kidderminster if the timetable worked out. However, ticket prices are still very steep for anyone travelling alone as (unlike for the galas) there's no "table for one" option, and the lack of Engine House access for at least the first month doesn't get you any discount.

Right now, my feeling is that I probably won't be travelling on the SVR again until midsummer at the earliest. Never say never, and I suppose it's possible something might make me change my mind. But my underlying hunch is that until there's a non-gala ticket that's reasonably priced for one person, I'll just be watching from the outside. It'll be good enough to see the trains at all after all these months. :)
